Gamma Ray Greetings
Remarks by Ambassador Sue M. Cobb at the
launch of the Vacis Cobalt 60 gamma ray systems.
March 2, 2004
As prepared
Prime Minister Patterson, Minister Pickersgill, Noel Hylton, Mr. Maragh, good morning. I am pleased to join the government of Jamaica, the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Shipping Association for this ceremony to mark the launch of the Vacis Cobalt 60 gamma ray systems.
The Gamma Ray Systems, purchased from US companies, are state of the art, non-intrusive inspection equipment used to screen in-bound, out-bound and transit containers at the ports of Kingston and Montego Bay.
The use of this equipment should significantly improve port security and assist GOJ in its efforts to bring Jamaica's container inspection regime up to international standards. I understand the use of this equipment has already assisted in identifying stolen cars, bootleg liquor, and smuggled cigarettes. We hope it pays off in increased security and in enhanced revenue collection for Jamaica.
The United States is delighted that the port authority has made this investment in modern scanning equipment. We hope that it will help the government o Jamaica to meet the July 1, 2004 deadline for the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) code compliance.
The United States is pleased to work with Jamaica - our partner in trade - to promote safe and secure ports that help our nations to combat criminal elements, while facilitating commerce through the Caribbean region.
Thank you.
