U.S. Fulbright Scholars Named

KINGSTON- July 26, 2004:

Legal Counsel to the Antidumping and Subsidies Commission in Jamaica Delroy Beckford and University of the West Indies (UWI) graduate Dana-Marie Morris have been named as the 2004/2005 recipients of the of the prestigious Fulbright Graduate Student Scholarships.

The scholarships, administered by the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) at the United States Embassy in Kingston, will enable the scholars to pursue further studies in their chosen fields.  Mr. Beckford will pursue studies leading to a doctoral degree in global affairs at Rutgers University in the fall of 2004 while Ms. Morris pursues her doctorate in international political economics focusing on development and public policy at the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies.

The Fulbright Program is a well-respected international exchange program sponsored by the United States Government.  It was established in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries. Since its inception, more than 250,000 participants from countries all over the world have been selected for their academic achievements and leadership potential to study and/or teach internationally.

Mr. Beckford, a part-time lecturer in Public International Law in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, is widely published on issues relating to international law and trade remedies and has conducted several seminars on international trade issues in Jamaica and in the broader Caribbean.  As legal counsel for the Anti-dumping and Subsidies Commission, Mr. Beckford specializes in international trade law, particularly anti-dumping, countervailing duty, and other safeguards.

Dana-Marie Morris, a former research fellow in the Department of Government at the UWI and honor society inductee, holds a bachelor degree in international relations and economics as well as a master's degree in government, specializing in international relations.   Ms. Morris sees the Fulbright scholarship as an opportunity to gain more insight into effective policy formulation and implementation for developing countries like Jamaica.
