US Embassy announces International Fulbright Science and Technology Award
The US Embassy is pleased to announce the 2008 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students. This is a worldwide competition to select outstanding students in science, technology or engineering who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. The award, which is among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology, is for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions.
The U.S. Department of State will fund grants for up to three years for this competition. All grantees will receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. The Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York will handle placement of students by identifying the appropriate U.S. universities for each finalist and submitting university applications on his/her behalf.
Applicants must be Jamaican citizens and will have completed a master’s degree before August 1, 2008. Applicants may access either the Interactive Word Format or the PDF version of the Science and Technology application at www.iie.org/fulbright/apps. Each applicant is required to submit a paper application to Mrs. Angella Harvey, Cultural Affairs Specialist, Office of Public Affairs, 142 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, no later than Friday, May 11, 2007. Final interviews of pre-screened candidates will take place in the Office of Public Affairs on Monday, June 4, 2007. Only those persons who are selected after interviews will be required to complete an online application for submission to IIE.
A complete application package (consisting of electronic and paper items) includes the online application form, academic transcripts, letters of reference, and the General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score. General GRE and GRE Subject exams (if applicable) are required for final university admissions. If an applicant cannot submit a GRE score at the point of application due to testing access issues, he/she may submit the application without it. However, it will be critical that the applicant register for the GRE October general test and the GRE November subject test. Should you require information about the GRE, please contact the Office of Public Affairs’ Information Resource Center (IRC) at 702-6172 or 702-6163.
