PRESS RELEASES 2005
Assistance for Victims of Hurricane Katrina in the United States
August 31, 2005
The United States Embassy wishes to thank all Jamaicans who have expressed concern and sympathy for the residents of the states of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida who have been affected by the passage of Hurricane Katrina. As President George W. Bush said today: “We are dealing with one of the worst natural disasters in our nation’s history.”
The U.S. Embassy also deeply appreciates all the kind offers of assistance and support from individuals, organizations and the Government of Jamaica. The United States Government is not yet requesting international assistance at this time; however, for those who wish to extend a helping hand, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is coordinating recovery efforts. FEMA’s website at http://www.fema.gov/ includes information and links to the American Red Cross and other organizations that are now seeking assistance for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
