Elizabeth Lee Martinez assumed her duties as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston on September 19, 2013. She is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, and has over 25 years of experience with the U.S. Department of State.
Ms. Martinez most recently served as Director of the Office of Canadian Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. Her previous assignments include Deputy Director in the Office of the Special Envoy to Sudan (2009-2011) and Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2006-2009). Her other overseas postings include Nassau, The Bahamas, Casablanca, Morocco, and San Salvador, El Salvador.
Ms. Martinez has also served in Washington as Director of the Executive Secretariat’s Support Staff, Senior Watch Officer in the Operations Center, Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary, and in various positions in the Bureaus of Western Hemisphere and East Asia and Pacific Affairs.
A native of Ohio and long-suffering Cleveland sports fan, Ms. Martinez holds a BA in International Studies from Miami University and M.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University. She speaks Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Arabic. She is married and has one daughter.
