June 21, 2005
The United States Embassy is pleased to announce that Mr. Daniel Khan recently received an appointment to the prestigious United States Military Academy located at West Point, New York. Hailing from Ardenne High School, Daniel is a student in the advanced level academic program, class representative for Mills House, and was captain of the basketball team. In the community, Daniel is a member of the local church youth cabinet and a volunteer teacher at vacation bible school. The son of proud parents Edith and Lieutenant Colonel Oral Khan, Daniel leaves for the United States on June 22 to start the four-year course of instruction.
While at West Point, Daniel can look forward to an enriching program that focuses on cultivating the mental and physical potential of young men and women. West Point students receive academic training leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree. The instruction encompasses the traditional science, engineering and humanities classes, but also stresses ethics and leadership studies which promote responsibility and community awareness. All students participate in regular physical training and are expected to play team sports.
Daniel is no stranger to the rigors of military training, as he comes from a Jamaica Defense Force family. In Daniel’s words, “I have realized that anything associated with the Army is of high quality. It is one of the most respected organizations in Jamaica. I know that West Point is focused on academics, but also committed to rounding out the student’s character with physical training and teaching morals. It will not be easy, but I know I can successfully complete it.” Daniel’s current plans include serving in the Jamaica Defense Force after completing West Point.
