Jonathan Grant High School library gets boost

U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica, Brenda LaGrange Johnson, on Friday, April 27, 2007 gave a much needed boost to the library at Jonathan Grant High School, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, when she presented a set of 84 books to the school.

The Scholastic Secondary Ambassador collection includes titles on U.S. History, Geography, Art and Music, Sports and Sports Personalities. The set also includes popular titles such as Little Women and Call of the Wild as well as popular historical fiction Pocahontas and Davy Crockett.

In making the presentation to the school, Ambassador Johnson encouraged the students to read widely, citing American pop culture icon Oprah Winfrey, who identified reading as one of the primary tools to escape poverty.

The Jonathan Grant High School is located in an inner-city Spanish Town, St. Catherine, an area fraught with many socio-economic challenges. The school has a population of 2,394 students with 96 teachers.

The Ambassador spent time speaking with the students about their involvement in school activities, and took questions about her role and function as US Ambassador to Jamaica.
