U.S. Department of State Sponsors Jamaican Journalist to Cover
OAS General Assembly in Florida
KINGSTON- June 2, 2005
The United States Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica is pleased to announce the U.S. Department of State’s sponsorship of Jamaican journalist Dionne Jackson Miller to attend the Organization of American States General Assembly in Fort Lauderdale, Florida June 5-7, 2005.
Jackson Miller was selected to attend the conference due to her experience covering national and international news and current affairs for both broadcast and print media, and her ability to intelligently break down complicated news stories to reach an everyday audience.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will chair the three-day meeting, which brings together the foreign ministers of the Americas. This marks the first time since 1974 that the U.S. is hosting an OAS General Assembly, the organization’s highest decision-making forum.
Among the topics the foreign ministers are expected to examine in Fort Lauderdale are: fulfilling the promise of the Inter-American Democratic Charter for all the peoples of the Americas; promoting a democratic culture; advancing in the fight against illegal drugs; improving the status of indigenous peoples; strengthening the inter-American human rights protection system; combating transnational criminal youth gangs; and making 2006 the Inter-American Year of the Fight against Corruption.
In addition to her role as a producer and presenter on RJR’s “Beyond the Headlines,” Jackson Miller is also a freelance reporter for Inter Press Service (IPS). She has worked in natural resources conservation and has been reporting on global issues such as the environment, politics, and current affairs for almost a decade. She holds a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of the West Indies.
