Political/Economic Section (P/E)
The Political/Economic Section actively negotiates with Jamaican government officials on issues of mutual interest to the U.S. and Jamaican governments. The section also keeps Washington-based policymakers and analysts abreast of local and regional economic and political developments and works to secure Jamaican support for U.S. positions and initiatives in international fora, particularly in the UN, the OAS, the WTO, and in the FTAA process.
The section seeks to encourage the continued development of democratic values, respect for human and labor rights and free market ideals in Jamaica. It works with local officials to instill anti-corruption awareness and to promote good governance, to remove HIV/AIDS stigma from the workplace and to protect children. Political and Economic Officers actively promote the passage of legislation to deter, prevent and punish money laundering and terrorism financing, to protect intellectual property rights, to streamline and bolster the judicial system, and to fulfill Jamaica's anti-terrorism obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1373.
The Section also works with Jamaican government officials to promote sound macroeconomic and fiscal policies that will guarantee Jamaica remains a stable and open market.
In addition, the Political/Economic Section works with the Office of Public Affairs and USAID on the US Embassy Kingston's key HIV/AIDS and Environmental programs and strategies. It also assists the Narcotics Affairs Section, the Coast Guard Attache, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service and embassy law enforcement agencies in enhancing Jamaica's port and border security, contributing to U.S. homeland defense.
