U.S. Embassy Supports Environmental Protection in Jamaica
through Program Sponsorship
July 11, 2005
The United States Embassy in Kingston is pleased to announce Mrs. Rose Perrin-Greenwood, Director of Land Use, Planning and Development in Jamaica’s Ministry of Land and Environment, has been selected to participate in the International Visitor (IV) program on Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection. The U.S. State Department’s IV Program sends up and coming leaders to the U.S. each year to meet professional counterparts and experience the U.S. and its institutions first-hand.
Mrs. Perrin-Greenwood’s three-week IV program, which began July 7, examines the interrelationship between economic and social development and environmental protection, focusing on urban population management, environmental research and education, public health and the use of technology in agriculture. Participants include environmentalists, educators, government officials, journalists and NGO representatives.
Mrs. Perrin-Greenwood believes this program will expose her to other cities’ sustainable development strategies, and help her propose strategies that take an integrated and holistic approach to solving environmental problems. She also hopes to learn best practices in enforcing environmental legislation and new trends in environmental preservation and management.
In her role at the Ministry, Mrs. Perrin Greenwood directs policy on enforcement and coordinates a national project aimed at instilling national pride through the development and maintenance of green spaces. She assists in developing policies regarding the environment and land use planning, and makes recommendations pertaining to planning and development to the Permanent Secretary and the Minister of Land and the Environment.
